Underrepresented writer? Need a hand with a piece? Read this!

If you’re a writer from an underrepresented background and would like someone to review your work and provide detailed feedback, reach out! I’m an editor and writer with 12+ years of experience. I’d love to work with you.

I’ve held editorial roles since 2012. Over my career, I’ve edited two B2B magazines, led the content team at a major e-commerce retailer, and judged writing awards. Prior to publishing, I taught English as a foreign language. While my areas of expertise are drinks and whisky, I can provide structural feedback on wider subjects.

What I’m offering

I have a small amount of space in my schedule in late March/early April 2024 and would love to work with new writers from underrepresented backgrounds. I anticipate having time to review and provide detailed feedback on one piece of work of around 1,500 words for five writers. You’ll receive line edits, detailed notes and advice on how to sharpen the piece.

About you

You’ll likely be a writer at the start of your career, looking to move into the profession, or exploring going freelance. You’ll be writing regularly, perhaps for a blog or in a journal. You do NOT need to be a student, and age is irrelevant here! You’ll be unpublished or in an early editorial role where you don’t write often. This opportunity is open to writers from underrepresented groups.

What do I mean by ‘underrepresented’ writers? This could be you if you feel your opportunities are limited due to your race or ethnicity, being part of the LGBTQIA+ community, a physical disability, long-term illness, mental health challenges, sensory impairment, neurodiversity, being from a working class background, or as a survivor. You will not be asked to ‘prove’ eligibility.

How it will work

Email your work with a cover note. In the note, include info about yourself and context for your work. Attach your piece in a Word doc. Put ‘WORK FOR REVIEW’ at the start of the subject line, followed by the title of the piece. Send it to kristiane@kristianesherry.com by Thursday 14 March. I’ll respond to successful writers the following week with when you can expect your review and edits.

A final note

I plan to work with five writers. If this is a success, I may open for more writing reviews/line edits later in the year. If I don’t select you this time, I’m sorry! I’d love to work with as many writers as possible but capacity constraints are real. This is an informal arrangement and while I will work with you professionally, this in no way constitutes an official working relationship. Copyright remains yours at all times.

I can’t wait to hear from you!
